ZAZA FOURNIER ( - FR)
Oddly named singer Zaza, must be seen, perched on stool, accordion around her neck, banging out tunes with the cocky verve of a fifties cabaret matinee rock star. For Zaza Fournier is all this and more, a head-turning, leg-shaking mix of styles, so it’s no surprise to find in her music, touches of Edith Piaf, Elvis Presley, Tom Waits and Brigitte Fontaine. Yet beneath her retro-kitch image, Zaza Fournier is resolutely modern, and her meeting with producer-arranger Jack Lahana and Phoenix musician Rob did the rest. Today she’s released the album she’s always dreamed of, a record both dense and soft, lyrical and energetic, dominated by a husky sensual voice forged in street concerts and informed by the rhythms of love.
